The Neurofeedback Study
The Neurofeedback Study examined the interaction between different parts of the brain and our ability to increase or decrease the activity in these different areas. The information collected helped us to understand how networks in the brain interact and how they affect personality and memory. This study was open to adults from ages 21 to 45 who lived in Rockland, Westchester, Orange, and Bergen Counties.
The Neurofeedback Study was funded by the US National Institutes of Health and the NY State Office of Mental Health. Results from this study were shared with research scientists around the world to speed scientific discovery.
Study visits
This study took place at the Nathan Kline Institute (NKI) in Orangeburg, NY, which is easily accessible by municipal bus routes. It included a total of three visits that were set up for the convenience of participants. Both weekday and weekend hours were available for scheduling.
The Neurofeedback Study involved one day-long visit and two short visits. The first visit was short and allowed participants to learn more about the study and what was involved.
The second lasted a full day and included a general medical evaluation, questionnaires, interviews about emotions and life experiences, cognitive tests (of memory, attention, and problem solving), and an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan. MRIs were non-invasive and used no radiation or dyes.
The third visit lasted a half day and took place shortly after the second one. During this visit, participants learned to control simple computer games with their own brain activity during an MRI scan.
Participants’ results
Participants received a copy of their blood work results and their MRI report if they wished. Our clinical research team was available to discuss results from other study procedures and provided personalized feedback upon requests.
Confidentiality
Participants’ confidential health information was protected by a Certificate of Confidentiality from the US Government. Scientific results that were shared with research scientists did not include any personal identifying information.
Payment
Participants received a total of $220 for the first two visits and $60 for the additional half-day visit. In addition, lunch will be provided on full-day visits. Transportation costs were included in the total payment of the study.
